2. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden

Escape to the tranquil scene of the botanical gardens, offering the calming sounds projected from the Witpoortjie Waterfall while the birds and small animals roam around on the lush green lawns.

The botanical gardens were founded in 1982 but the destination has been a popular site for decades with over 600 different plants, 226 bird species and reptiles, antelope and an odd jackal or two which can be spotted from the Roodekrans Rudge.

3. Johannesburg Zoo

Covering over 55 hectares of land, the zoo was founded in 1904 when the land was donated by the form Herman Ekstein.

The zoo is an internationally accredited and highly respected for the husbandry practice of maintaining a high standard of animal welfare, nutrition and ethical conduct whilst ensuring the physical and psychological well-being of the 320 species of animals which are housed.

The zoo plays an important role in conservation projects for indigenous and worldwide endangered animals.

4. Brenthurst Gardens

The Brenthurst Estate offers the gardens of the famous mining dynasty the Oppenheimer family, sprawling over 16 hectares with indigenous plants and trees making up 70 percent of the greenery.

The greenery comprises of a variety of woodland, formal, informal and wild areas which have been allowed to flourish for over more than a century making it a garden listed amongst the greatest in the world.

5. James & Ethel Gray Park

The park is named after James and Ethel Gray, two of Johannesburg’s early historians. The park is snuggly fitted into the affluent suburb of Birdhaven and was originally a bird sanctuary.

Although the park is not a bird sanctuary anymore, you are still able to see an assortment of feathered residents and a Johannesburg resident favour after the R 5-million upgrade.

The Sandspruit River flows through the park, creating an attractive and tranquil atmosphere.
